Here's our latest teeth whitening question from Julia H. in the UK. Here's her question:
I have used Nite white (16%) for 2 nights now and can already notice the difference in whiteness. My teeth are very sensitive so I don’t plan to use it for a few days. My teeth stain very easily, is it appropriate to use this product once every 3 weeks or so. Can you damage your teeth with prolonged usage?
Here's a professional response from Shannon Pace Brinker, CDA CDD:
Julia,
I am really glad you are starting to see a noticeable change with NiteWhite. Some patients do get some sensitivity, but this is normal. We advise patients that there are several options for sensitivity.
Fluoride can be placed in the tray before bleaching or alternate usage every other day to reduce the sensitivity. Reduce the bleaching time frame from overnight usage to maybe 2 to 4 hours an day.
Speak to your dentist to see if maybe a different % is needed if sensitivity persists.
To our knowledge nothing detrimental has been documented and microscopic research shows no changes to the tooth surface with use of bleaching solution. There is no research that shows any structural changes or damage to the tooth structure. Most everyone will see a change in the brightness after bleaching when we go back to drinking coffee, red wine and dark solutions. It is very safe to bleach as often as you see needed.
Thank you for your question,
