Disadvantages
There are some disadvantages to whitening with toothpastes. Some people can experience tooth or gum sensitivity due to the mild abrasives or other whitening agents in teeth whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes. Also, since such toothpastes are only designed to remove surface stains, you should not expect to see your teeth whiten by several shades. Other whitening options, including strips, paint-on gels, in office procedures and professionally dispensed treatments can whiten your teeth several shades by permeating the enamel and bleaching the tooth. Whitening toothpastes don’t change the color of your teeth, and cannot produce comparable results to these other methods.
Teeth whitening mouthwashes can’t deliver a high enough concentration of any whitening chemicals because when you rinse they touch all the tissue in your mouth. Strips, gels, toothpastes and professionally dispensed treatments are applied directly to the teeth, so they can contain stronger bleaching agents, and are generally more effective.
